When can i actually start a project??

I have just finished my first year in mechanical engineering with a cgpa 8.9.I am interested in making projects so as to gain practical experience and uplift my chances of better placements.They will also enable me to think better and polish my ideas.Could you please suggest me the various activities i can undertake and the various events that i can participate in ?????????? how can i start the same??Hoping for a quick reply.Thank you very much.
