How are last rites given to a murder victim?

I am working on a novel and, as a non-Catholic, I wanted to get this information right, but I cannot find it anywhere on the web. IN my story, one of the people murder is Catholic and the story mentions the detective going to the funeral. If a Catholic person is a murder victim, can they give the last rites to the body? I know the last rites are typically given to people who are still alive, so is there any other sort of Catholic funeral ceremony a priest might undertake to help prepare a Catholic murder victim for the afterlife? Keep in mind, this is for a story and no a real life situation, so please keep the religious trollz to a minimum.
