Does anyone know the best hotel to stay in the french quarter. My wife and I want to be close to all.?

We would like to be within walking distance of everything since we will not be renting a car. I have read negatives on just about every hotel in new orleans. We were considering the Omni royal or the Monteleone. any advice would be greatly appreciated.
