New Orleans French Quarter: Is it safe to walk the streets that are between Bourbon and Jackson Square?

Alot of hotels are off bourbon street such as Omni and Lerichelieu, and on streets that are between bourbon and river.... are these streets safe to walk around on also? I keep imagining how it is on beale street memphis and you have to basically walk down alleys and stuff to get to the strip there....do the "middle" streets have lots of tourist and shops as well? or do they look like alleys? thanks.
