Downtown St Louis safety?

I'm a 50 something man who will be in St Louis alone to watch a few Cards games in July. I'll be staying in the Omni on Pine St. Do I need to be especially careful walking to my hotel after a night game? I am from the NY area, so I'm no stranger to the usual precautions of urban life, but I've seen a lot of stories about crime in St Louis and became a little concerned. My guess is that they are a little overblown, but I'd like to hear from people familiar with the area. Thank you
