DODGE OMNI: parts switch question?

I was wondering... is it possible that I could switch out the steering colum from a 1990 Dodge Omni and put it in a 1985 Omni? Would the airbag in the 1990 column (now in the 1985 Omni) be functional? Becuase that's the only thing really holding me back from getting one besides finding one without too much rust. And please don't hate on the Omni, I know it's old and generally viewed as unattractive, but it's a family heirloom and I just want it to be safe to drive (not that it's not already...). Plus, as a bonus, it gets great gas milage.
