Can an omni bonce be used instead of a umbrella?

I am curious to know if it is just as effective as defusing the flash as an umbrella would be. Would the umbrella offer more options (white umbrella) because you can shoot through or use it as a bounce? Or would an omni bounce work just the same and prevent harsh lighting just as well?
